# Sideband

## Connect

Attach to an existing Live session. Do not send session.start again.

**WebSocket** `wss://api.openai.com/v1/live/sessions/{session_id}/attach`

### Example

```ruby
require "openai"
require "async"
# Use an eligible existing Live session ID owned by your project.
client = OpenAI::Client.new
Sync do |task|
  # Stop waiting if the peer never sends the expected events.
  task.with_timeout(60) do
    # This block releases only the observer, not the owner's session.
    client.live.sideband.connect('sess_123') do |connection|
      complete = false
      connection.each do |event|
        case event
        when OpenAI::Live::ErrorEvent
          raise "Live reported a session error."
        when OpenAI::Live::SessionUsageUpdatedEvent
          puts "Current cumulative usage: #{event.usage}"
          complete = true
          break
        when OpenAI::Live::SessionClosedEvent
          puts "Final usage: #{event.usage}"
          complete = true
          break
        end
      end
      raise "Observer disconnected before a usage update or session.closed" unless complete
    end
  end
end
```

## Domain Types

### Sideband Client Event

- `SidebandClientEvent = SessionUpdateEvent | InputAudioMuteEvent | InputAudioUnmuteEvent | 11 more`

  Client events accepted by an attached Live sideband WebSocket. The session has already started. Send input audio over the primary connection.

  - `class SessionUpdateEvent`

    Update the delegation settings or transcript triggers of an active Live session. The server acknowledges accepted changes with `session.updated`.

    - `session: SessionUpdateConfig`

      Sparse delegation and trigger updates. Omitted settings retain their values. The delegation type cannot change. Model, frontend instructions, audio, and startup input are immutable.

      - `delegation: ClientDelegation | Responses{ type, acknowledgement_delay_ms, responses} | Decisions{ type, acknowledgement_delay_ms, decisions}`

        Delegation settings to update. The delegation type must match the current session; omitted settings retain their values.

        - `class ClientDelegation`

          Delegate tasks to your application. The Live session emits delegation events that your backend handles.

          - `type: :client`

            The delegation owner. Always `client` for tasks handled by your application.

            - `:client`

          - `acknowledgement_delay_ms: Integer`

            Milliseconds to wait before requesting an automatic spoken acknowledgement for a delegation. The model may still speak before this delay. Any commentary or thinking appended to the session cancels all pending acknowledgements, including those for other delegations. Defaults to 400 for Decisions sessions and 0 (request immediately) for other sessions. Omission in a session update preserves the current value. Updates apply to subsequent delegations.

            `minimum: 0`, `maximum: 800`

        - `class Responses`

          Update the Responses backend for an existing Live session without changing delegation ownership.

          - `type: :responses`

            The delegation owner. Always `responses` for tasks handled by the Responses API.

            - `:responses`

          - `acknowledgement_delay_ms: Integer`

            Milliseconds to wait before requesting an automatic spoken acknowledgement for a delegation. The model may still speak before this delay. Any commentary or thinking appended to the session cancels all pending acknowledgements, including those for other delegations. Defaults to 400 for Decisions sessions and 0 (request immediately) for other sessions. Omission in a session update preserves the current value. Updates apply to subsequent delegations.

            `minimum: 0`, `maximum: 800`

          - `responses: ResponsesDelegationUpdateConfig`

            Responses backend settings to update. Omitted settings keep their existing values.

            - `instructions: String`

              Instructions for the delegated Responses model, separate from Live instructions. See [backend prompting](/api/docs/guides/live-delegation#start-with-your-existing-backend-prompt).

            - `max_output_tokens: Integer`

              Maximum number of output tokens for each delegated response.

              `minimum: 16`

            - `model: String`

              The Responses backend model to use for subsequent delegated requests. Omit to keep the current backend model.

            - `parallel_tool_calls: bool`

              Whether the delegated Responses model may request multiple tool calls in a single response.

            - `reasoning: Reasoning{ effort, summary}`

              Reasoning settings passed to each delegated Responses request.

              - `effort: :none | :minimal | :low | 3 more`

                How much reasoning effort the delegated Responses model should use. Supported values depend on the backend model.

              - `verbosity: :low | :medium | :high`

                The amount of detail in text generated by the Responses backend. This does not configure the Live model’s spoken delivery.

                - `:low`

                - `:medium`

                - `:high`

    Play one complete audio fixture through the session output. Send this event over the primary WebSocket or a server sideband. Audio must be raw mono PCM16 little-endian at 24 kHz, regardless of the session audio format, and at most 30 seconds. The entire payload is validated before model speech is interrupted and input is muted. Only one fixture can be active. fixture.playing acknowledges acceptance and fixture.played reports server mixer drain. These notifications are not exact transport-media boundaries. Input arriving during playback is dropped and not replayed.

    Send one DTMF keypress to the SIP trunk through a Live sideband connection. This command is supported only for SIP calls. A successful send emits `transport.dtmf.sent` on sideband. If you provide `event_id`, the success notification includes it as `client_event_id`; a failure includes it as `error.client_event_id`. Send separate events for multiple keypresses.

    - `event: String`

      The DTMF key to send: one of `0`–`9`, `A`–`D`, `*`, or `#`.

              When omitted, inherits a supported outer reasoning effort or uses the
              image model's configured default.
              For SVG output, controls the reference image, not the SVG author's
              reasoning.

Width and height must both be divisible by 16 and the requested aspect ratio must be between 1:3 and 3:1. Resolutions above `2560x1440` are experimental, and the maximum supported resolution is `3840x2160`. The requested size must also satisfy the model's current pixel and edge limits. The standard sizes `1024x1024`, `1536x1024`, and `1024x1536` are supported by the GPT image models; `auto` is supported for models that allow automatic sizing.

              - `String = String`

    The complete audio fixture has drained from the server mixer and normal inference has resumed. Transport buffers may still contain audio; this event does not prove listener-side completion. The optional client_event_id echoes the play command. This event is not emitted for canceled or failed playback.

    - `event_id: String`

      The unique ID of the Live server event.
