Getting started with ChatGPT Work

Use Work when a task is scattered across the tools you already use and needs to end in a finished result.

Illustrative animation: ChatGPT uses the Gmail plugin to review 12 fictional emails and group unsubscribe candidates by category: Newsletters, 6 emails; Promotions, 4 emails; Product updates, 2 emails. A simulated approval is followed by successful unsubscribe confirmations. This is a demo: no real emails or subscriptions are changed.

Chat or Work?

Use Chat when you need a thoughtful answer, want to explore an idea, or work through a question. Choose Work when a task needs information from other apps, several steps, or a finished result you can review.

Say you need to confirm a team dinner. The restaurant’s email is in Gmail, while the latest headcount and dietary restrictions are in Slack. Work can bring those details together and draft the reply.

Chat
Ask, explore, or think through an idea.
Work
Gather context from tools and prepare a result you can review.

Why not use Work for everything?

Both Chat and Work can use plugins. Choose Chat for questions, brainstorming, and quick edits. Choose Work when you want ChatGPT to carry out a task with several steps and bring back a result you can review.

Longer or more complex tasks may take more time and use more credits. Start in Chat if a conversation is enough; choose Work when those extra steps help. Learn about Work usage .

Connect the right apps

Plugins connect ChatGPT to the apps you already use. Open Plugins in the sidebar, search for Gmail, and select Install. Do the same for Slack.

Once they’re connected, ask ChatGPT to find an email, get context from Slack, and draft a reply. Review the message, make changes, and send it when you’re ready.

Try it

Start by downloading the ChatGPT desktop app. Once you’re signed in, choose Work and try a simple task with Gmail.
